A study conducted in Kermanshah, Iran, reveals a troubling link between forced marriage, domestic violence, and suicidal thoughts among married adults. Out of 369 participants aged 18-59, 24.1% reported suicidal ideation, with 33.9% having experienced forced marriage and 22.2% physical intimate partner violence (IPV). The results showed that individuals facing forced marriage had nearly 2.5 times the likelihood of suicidal thoughts, while those who experienced IPV had over twice the risk. Other significant factors included a history of suicide attempts, mental disorders, and being female. Conversely, higher levels of social support and resilience were associated with a reduced risk of suicidal ideation. The study underlines the importance of addressing forced marriage and domestic violence as critical issues in mental health, suggesting that enhancing social support and resilience could be vital in preventing suicides. The findings call for targeted interventions to address these harmful social practices and bolster mental health resources in the region.
