Juliana Agudelo Ariza, Seattle Youth Commissioner, reflects on the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. On Sept. 24, the City of Seattle hosted an event to honor the cultural traditions and achievements of Hispanic and Latino communities. The gathering at City Hall featured cultural displays, traditional performances, and vibrant music, showcasing the pride of various Latin American countries. Community leaders, including Angela Rae and Dr. Ismael Fajardo, emphasized the importance of education and advocacy for better opportunities within the city for Latinx individuals. Councilmembers Maritza Rivera and Alexis Mercedes Rinck highlighted the contributions of Hispanic and Latinx citizens and the significance of their identities in shaping their perspectives and advocacy work. The event served as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to support and celebrate Hispanic culture, as well as the unity found in community gatherings. Dr. Fajardo noted that culture is preserved and celebrated through such events, while Councilmember Rinck stressed the importance of coming together to combat fear and foster a sense of belonging and empowerment. The celebration exemplified the resilience and strength of the Hispanic and Latino community in Seattle.
