Young adults with mental health issues require suitable support as they transition to adulthood. A study examined their experiences with “test discharges,” temporary releases from treatment followed by readmission. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with young adults in a Flemish semi-residential unit. Initially, participants found test discharges alienating and frightening. However, they later viewed the experience as beneficial for personal growth. It offered them realistic feedback and helped them recognize and modify their behavior patterns. The study concludes that young adults face both practical and emotional challenges during test discharges. Providing targeted counseling aimed at enhancing their autonomy and self-confidence is essential for optimizing this therapeutic intervention.
