Food insecurity is a significant public health issue in the South Bronx, with one-third of residents relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for food support. A study explored the experiences of 37 adults from this area who used food pantries while facing food insecurity and chronic illnesses. Participants reported dealing with health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, thyroid conditions, and mental illness. They expressed the need for food assistance programs to be better aligned with their financial limitations and health challenges. The study emphasizes the importance of linking food assistance to healthcare services. Given recent cuts to federal SNAP funding, it advocates for prioritizing local public funding to improve food access for individuals with chronic illnesses in the South Bronx and across New York City.
