A study tested the REDFLAGS Model, a mental health resource designed for college students, particularly those in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This model consists of an acronym representing warning signs of mental distress. Researchers evaluated its effectiveness with a sample of 358 STEM students. Findings supported the model’s ability to identify signs of mental distress, indicating that students who recognized these signs were more likely to refer peers to counseling services. The study also found that students with previous help-seeking experiences and those identifying as female were more adept at recognizing these warning signs compared to their male counterparts and those without help-seeking histories. The results suggest that the REDFLAGS Model could serve as a valuable framework for college counselors to enhance mental health support for STEM students. The model is freely available for distribution in both print and digital formats.
