A study published in December 2025 explores the use of accelerometers to identify self-injurious behavior in individuals with autism during functional analyses (FA). FAs are crucial for determining the reasons behind disruptive behavior and developing effective treatment plans. However, traditional data collection methods can be prone to human error. In this pilot study, three participants with autism who exhibited self-hitting behaviors wore small accelerometer devices while undergoing an FA. Researchers gathered data through live observation, frame-by-frame video analysis, and the accelerometers. They then compared the accuracy of these methods by calculating interobserver agreement across the different data sets. The study presents findings and offers recommendations for practice and future research, highlighting the potential of accelerometers as a reliable tool for assessing behavioral events in clinical settings.
