Army Veteran Miranda Zuhlke faced numerous challenges while trying to start her family, including several miscarriages and costly in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. After seven years and nearly $400,000 spent on treatments, Zuhlke and her husband welcomed their first son, Chance, in April 2022, with help from a gestational carrier. Struggling with the financial burden and limited insurance coverage, Zuhlke learned that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers IVF coverage for infertility related to service-connected disabilities. With the support of her doctor and a letter of medical necessity, Zuhlke accessed VA benefits, which cover medications, appointments, and embryo storage. This enabled her to undergo another round of treatments, leading to the birth of her second son, Soren, in November 2024. Zuhlke emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about these benefits, encouraging other women in military service who may be facing similar struggles to seek help.
