Martha Leon has dedicated her home to providing care for Veterans through the VA Southern Arizona Health Care System’s Medical Foster Home program. After starting as a volunteer in assisted living, she was inspired to become a caregiver for Veterans and officially joined the program three months later. Since June 2014, Leon’s home has become a nurturing environment for many Veterans, who often refer to her as “mom.”
The Medical Foster Home program offers personalized support to Veterans who cannot live independently, including regular home visits from a comprehensive primary care team. Leon ensures her residents receive three nutritious meals a day, laundry services, and tailored care to meet specific dietary needs. She finds great fulfillment in forming close bonds with the Veterans, noting that they often transition from patients to family members.
Leon is committed to continuing her work as long as she is able, emphasizing the importance of providing vital services to Veterans. Her home is designed to be safe and welcoming, reflecting her dedication to compassionate caregiving. Leon hopes that, in the future, she will receive the same love and respect she gives to those in her care.
