Diana Calero, a former Navy service member now working as a Customs and Border Protection officer, sought to improve her health after gaining weight post-service. Struggling to see results from her workouts, she visited the Women’s Health Clinic at the Miami VA Healthcare System, where she received a referral to the Women’s Passport to Wellness program and a wellness coach. This program connects women Veterans with personalized coaching, resources, and the convenience of telehealth options.
Calero began working with wellness coach Otmara Soberanes, who shifted her focus from intense workouts to sustainable lifestyle changes. They held sessions mainly through VA Video Connect, allowing Calero to fit them into her busy schedule. By making small adjustments, such as healthier food choices and hydration reminders, Calero lost over 20 pounds and reduced her BMI from 28.4 to 24.7, maintaining her weight loss long-term.
Calero emphasized the importance of patience and consistent effort, stating that even gradual progress is still progress. She encourages other Veterans to seek support and consider wellness resources available through the VA to help achieve their health goals.
