At 101 years old, World War II Veteran George Poleske remains dedicated to his physical fitness despite being blind and mostly reliant on a wheelchair. He participates in physical therapy five days a week at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, where he has developed a strong bond with health technician Mary Kassens. Their sessions, filled with conversation and laughter, include walking, balance exercises, and upper body workouts. Poleske expresses his enthusiasm for exercise, saying it motivates him and adds joy to his day.
Poleske is a participant in the VA’s STRIDE program, which promotes movement among hospitalized Veterans. This program, initiated at the Milwaukee VA in 2020, focuses on daily walking and includes various exercises such as yoga to enhance flexibility and well-being. Occupational therapist Isabel Detienne highlights the program’s effectiveness in reducing hospital stays and preventing falls.
Kassens, who has worked with Poleske for two years, finds inspiration in his determination and encourages other Veterans by sharing his story. Poleske advises those hesitant about exercise to persist and strive for daily improvement, reinforcing the message that it’s never too late to pursue health care benefits from the VA.
