Seattle Councilmembers Alexis Mercedes Rinck and Dionne Foster condemned the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on Jan. 7, 2026. Mayor Jacob Frey labeled the incident reckless and unnecessary. The councilmembers expressed solidarity with Frey’s call for ICE to exit Minneapolis, highlighting the terror, family separation, and public safety issues caused by ICE operations. They also denounced ongoing ICE actions in Seattle, referencing confirmed detainments occurring in North Seattle on the same day as Good’s shooting.

Rinck emphasized that the federal government’s actions perpetuate violence and harm in communities, demanding accountability for those affected by ICE. Foster reassured residents living in fear that the city would continue to advocate for their safety and oppose ICE’s presence. Both councilmembers reaffirmed Seattle’s commitment to being a Welcoming City for immigrants and refugees, citing a recent unanimous City Council resolution supporting these communities. The Seattle Shield Initiative has expanded services for immigrants and refugees, including Know Your Rights training through the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs.
