The University of Washington (UW) has received the Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement reclassification for all three of its campuses, recognizing the university’s commitment to community connections and partnerships. This honor places UW among 277 peer institutions nationwide. The recognition highlights the university’s efforts to deepen partnerships, address societal challenges, and enhance community engagement practices.
UW President Robert J. Jones emphasized the importance of community engagement as central to the university’s mission. Since first earning this classification in 2020, UW has expanded its collaborations with over 700 community organizations, including nonprofit health providers, local governments, and educational institutions. Programs like Riverways Education Partnerships support K-12 education in rural and tribal areas, enhancing STEM learning and college readiness.
At UW Bothell and UW Tacoma, community engagement is integrated into curricula and student experiences, fostering reciprocal partnerships that contribute to regional development. Initiatives include addressing social and environmental challenges, such as mental health support for youth and sustainable practices. The Carnegie reclassification underscores UW’s dedication to making a meaningful impact through its community-driven work and long-term partnerships.
