Taiyaa Roundtree, a Navy Veteran, faced homelessness after health issues prevented him from completing boot camp. In 2022, while waiting at a library, he connected with another Veteran who informed him about the help available through VA programs and Catholic Charities. Encouraged, Roundtree reached out to VA and was referred to Catholic Charities’ Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, where he met Kailey Saint Jean. She provided immediate assistance, including securing a motel room and helping with paperwork. Through SSVF and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs’ Bringing Veterans Home initiative, Roundtree obtained a housing voucher that enabled him to find stable, affordable housing.
Saint Jean emphasized that many homeless Veterans might lack necessary documentation but should not hesitate to seek help. She continues to work with Catholic Charities and VA to assist other Veterans in finding permanent housing. Now, with a home, Roundtree is focused on rebuilding his life, taking gradual steps toward employment and independence. He encourages other Veterans to ask for help and connect with resources available to them, highlighting the importance of reaching out to fellow Veterans for support.
