Every year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday in January as a national Day of Service, emphasizing a “day on, not a day off.” This day encourages people to honor Dr. King’s legacy by contributing to their communities. As January 19 approaches, individuals are invited to connect with local VA Centers for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) to find volunteer opportunities supporting Veterans and their families.

Several ways to help include joining the Volunteer Transportation Network to drive Veterans to appointments, participating in the Compassionate Contact Corps to provide social interaction via phone calls, and assisting at events like food pantries and Veterans Day activities. Volunteers can also serve as Red Coat Ambassadors to guide Veterans at medical centers.

With nearly 28,000 volunteers nationwide, the call to action encourages everyone to explore how they can support Veterans through volunteering, donating, or financial contributions. By engaging in these activities, individuals can honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to community service and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have served in the military.
