When the federal government cut SNAP benefits last month, Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) responded by donating hundreds of bags of groceries to community partners, including the Lake City Library. Librarian Nancy Garrett expressed deep gratitude for the donations, noting that they greatly enhanced the library’s ability to serve patrons in need. The library, beyond lending books, provides essential social services to many, including adults and unhoused individuals seeking food and water.
Garrett shared a touching story about a recent evening when she and a children’s librarian stayed late to assist patrons. They encountered individuals in distress, one who had their belongings stolen. Thanks to the donations, they were able to offer snacks, water, and other supplies like hats and blankets to those in need as they left the library. Garrett emphasized the impact of the donations, highlighting the emotional toll on staff when they cannot assist hungry patrons. The library’s small budget for snacks is often insufficient, making community support vital. She thanked the donors for their generosity and partnership in making a difference in the community.
