Veterans Affairs (VA) is addressing chronic pain among Veterans with RelieVRx, a virtual reality (VR) therapy program that can be used at home. FDA-authorized, RelieVRx is designed for patients experiencing pain for over three months. The 8-week program utilizes a VR headset to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness techniques, and pain education through immersive experiences. Each session builds on the previous one, helping Veterans develop coping skills and establish habits for pain relief.
The program features various environments that assist with breathing techniques, promote calmness, and offer interactive exercises. Dr. Anne Lord Bailey, executive director of the Strategic Initiatives Lab, notes that Veterans are seeking more technology in their homes to align with their care plans. RelieVRx is part of VA’s broader initiative to provide non-drug pain management options and reduce opioid reliance.
Veterans completing the program often report reduced pain, improved mood, and better sleep. One participant described it as a life-changing experience that helped him understand mindfulness and manage his PTSD. RelieVRx is now available for prescription by any VA provider, with over 4,700 VR headsets deployed across more than 170 VA facilities nationwide.
