LIHI’s Lakefront Community House in Bitterlake is a year-round shelter for singles and couples, funded by the City of Seattle during winter months to add 30 additional beds from November to March. During severe weather events, when temperatures drop to 30°F or below, the shelter can expand to provide up to 30 more beds. This expansion occurred recently due to freezing temperatures. Sharon Lee, the Executive Director of LIHI, emphasized the urgent need for more year-round and severe weather shelter beds in Seattle, noting that 312 people experiencing homelessness in King County died from various causes, including freezing, in 2024. She highlighted the opportunity to reduce these deaths with support from Mayor Katie Wilson.
