United Way of King County is offering free tax preparation services for individuals earning less than $80,000 and couples earning less than $96,000. The campaign runs until April 19 at 20 locations across King County, with a virtual option available from February 2 to April 19. Funded by United Way, the IRS, and the City of Seattle, the program helps clients navigate their tax situations and access credits like the Earned Income Credit. Services include assistance for those needing an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), which is essential for non-citizens filing taxes. United Way offers language interpretation at many sites. Last year, the campaign served 18,000 clients, securing nearly $17 million in tax credits and refunds. Due to increased immigration enforcement, United Way encourages clients to consider virtual filing for added safety, though in-person assistance is available at various locations, including Southcenter Mall and Seattle Central Library. Clients are advised to bring all necessary documentation to minimize multiple visits, which can increase exposure. Services are free, and clients can leave at any time if they feel unsafe. United Way recommends filing early to avoid long wait times as the April deadline approaches.
