New data from Washington’s Child Wellness Survey reveals that families with young children demonstrate strong resilience despite facing significant challenges in meeting basic needs like housing, food, and childcare. The survey focuses on families with children aged 6 months to 5 years and provides a comprehensive view of early childhood and family well-being in the state. Key findings indicate that nearly all families report high levels of problem-solving skills, with 98% of children living in homes that effectively navigate challenges. However, about 20-30% of families still experience unmet basic needs, and 25% struggle to access necessary healthcare and childcare services. The survey, modeled after King County’s Best Starts for Kids Health Survey, aims to fill data gaps for this underrepresented age group. Nationally, similar trends are observed, with about 90% of families across the U.S. reporting excellent health for their young children. The results will assist public health partners and community organizations in identifying priorities and allocating resources effectively to support families in Washington.
