Military and veteran caregivers provide crucial support to loved ones with injuries or disabilities from service, with over 14 million Americans currently in this role. Many caregivers work around the clock, managing medical needs, coordinating appointments, and assisting with daily activities, which can lead to financial difficulties. One-third of military caregiver families live at or below the federal poverty line, and food insecurity affects 40% of caregivers for veterans aged 60 or younger. To address these challenges, Congress is urged to pass the bipartisan Veteran Caregiver, Reeducation, Reemployment, and Retirement Act (H.R. 2148/S. 879). This legislation would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to reimburse caregivers for certification or relicensure fees, easing their return to work. It would also extend health coverage, bereavement counseling, and provide access to federal employment assistance programs. The existing Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers offers financial support but stops abruptly when caregivers transition out of their role. Advocates emphasize the need for additional resources and legislative support to ensure caregivers are not left to navigate their challenges alone, highlighting the importance of passing this act.
