Seattle has reached a significant milestone in its Clean Heat Program, with over 2,000 oil-heated homes transitioning to electric heat pumps. This shift eliminates the need for approximately 20 million gallons of heating oil, which is equivalent to the amount that would fill nearly 700 train tankers. Each household switching to a heat pump can avoid using 10,000 gallons of oil over the heat pump’s lifespan, leading to an estimated savings of $45 million on heating bills over the next two decades.
The transition is part of Seattle’s goal to eliminate all oil-heated homes by 2030. Currently, about 6,000 oil-heated households remain. The Clean Heat Program offers rebates of up to $6,000 to assist with the costs of heat pumps. Households with greater financial needs may qualify for free installations.
Besides improving indoor air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which equates to removing 42,000 gas-powered cars from the roads for a year, heat pumps provide year-round comfort through heating and cooling. As the city continues this initiative, the focus remains on improving public health and environmental sustainability.
