KCRHA is collaborating with local partners to enhance shelter availability in Seattle, including a new RV Safe Lot and Tiny House Village (THV) in South Park, District 1. The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) has received a $3.3 million contract to develop the site at the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Glassyard location, set to open by summer 2026. The project will feature 72 parking spaces for vehicle residents and 20 tiny homes, accommodating a total of 92 households. These emergency shelter options provide temporary, stable housing and supportive services as residents seek permanent solutions. Nearly half of King County’s unhoused population lives in vehicles, with a notable concentration in Seattle’s District 1. Councilmember Rob Saka emphasized the need for safe parking areas that offer essential services. This initiative aligns with Seattle Mayor Katie B. Wilson’s vision for expanding shelter options, as expressed in her executive order earlier this year. Additionally, KCRHA is hosting workshops for service providers interested in building and operating THVs, with sessions scheduled for February 24 and 26. Registration is required for both virtual and in-person attendance.
