Ben Shortreed, a Marine veteran, faced a dramatic life change after losing his left hand in a fireworks accident. Following the amputation, he sought help from the Prosthetics Service at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, where he was fitted with a prosthesis and began occupational therapy. Despite the challenges that come with using a prosthesis, Shortreed was determined to adapt, realizing it required both mental and physical effort. His commitment led him to explore various prosthetic technologies, including a high-tech myoelectric hand.
Shortreed also focused on improving his physical health through the Supra Human program, which emphasizes fitness, nutrition, and mindset. His dedication earned him the title of “Supra Human Man of the Year.” The adjustments to his prosthesis were constant, especially as he engaged in weight-bearing exercises, which put stress on his residual limb. His collaboration with prosthetist Justin Heck has evolved into a supportive friendship, as they work together to enhance Shortreed’s functionality and lifestyle.
Excited about future advancements in prosthetics, including potential neurological connections, Shortreed expresses gratitude for the care he receives from the Milwaukee VA team, attributing his ongoing fitness journey to their support.
