Childcare settings play a crucial role in providing nutritious meals for preschool-aged children (0-5 years). A national survey of food provision in England revealed significant variability in menu usage among 322 participating settings, with only 56 (17.4%) submitting menus. Of these, 51 menus were readable and analyzed. The analysis showed considerable differences in the depth, completeness, and clarity of the menus. Key findings indicated that breakfasts, snacks, and beverages were frequently omitted or inadequately described. Additionally, some menus featured unclear dish names. While early years settings are expected to promote healthy eating, their effectiveness is influenced by broader structural factors. Addressing the challenges faced by childcare providers and families is essential for enhancing health promotion efforts for young children during a critical developmental period.
