A study evaluated the perceptions of family childcare home (FCCH) providers, sponsors, and families regarding the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) in California. Conducted from September 2023 to February 2024, the research involved semi-structured interviews with 31 FCCH providers, 10 sponsors, and 6 family recipients.
Participants noted that the temporary removal of reimbursement tiers and increased rates during the COVID-19 pandemic positively affected food quality and budgets. Benefits highlighted included nutrition education and enhanced food security for children. Families appreciated the variety of high-quality foods provided by CACFP. However, challenges remain, including administrative burdens, inadequate reimbursements, strict regulations, and the lingering effects of the pandemic and inflation.
The study concluded that increasing CACFP reimbursements while addressing other barriers could bolster participation and retention among FCCH providers and sponsors. This support is crucial for improving access to nutritious meals for children from low-income families.
