A study analyzed maternal mortality in Slovakia from 2007 to 2024, identifying 123 deaths with a maternal mortality ratio (MMR) of 12.46 per 100,000 live births. Of these, 15 deaths (12.20%) were deemed coincidental, resulting in an MMR of 1.52 per 100,000 live births. The majority of deaths were from direct causes (51 deaths, 41.46%) and indirect causes (54 deaths, 43.90%), while three deaths (2.44%) had unknown causes. Among the coincidental deaths, 80% were attributed to polytrauma, primarily from car accidents (66.67%), with a few cases involving train accidents and entrapment in an elevator. Additionally, three deaths resulted from homicide linked to domestic violence, accounting for 20% of the coincidental cases. The study emphasizes the need for better recognition of coincidental maternal deaths, which significantly affect public health. The Slovak Gynecological and Obstetric Society is working to gather data on these deaths, which are often excluded from vital statistics, highlighting the importance of addressing this issue to improve maternal health outcomes and safety globally.
