Thousands of residents in King County face challenges in affording basic hygiene items such as soap, toothpaste, and menstrual products. In response, the King County Council is considering a $50,000 proviso in the 2026–2027 budget to study hygiene poverty and create data-driven solutions. This initiative aims to lay the groundwork for sustainable recommendations in future budget cycles, promoting equitable access to hygiene resources.

Community members are encouraged to voice their support for this funding. Two ways to take action include attending a Budget Town Hall on November 12, 2025, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the King County Council Chambers or remotely via Zoom. Additionally, residents can email their King County Councilmember to advocate for the proposed funding. A suggested message emphasizes that hygiene is a human right and urges support for funding to enhance community health and equity.

Contact information for Essentials First’s Director of Advocacy and Outreach, Irene Muller, is provided for those with questions. The campaign emphasizes the collective effort to ensure every person in King County has access to essential hygiene products and the dignity they bring.
