A study published in Telemedicine and e-Health examines the experiences of Two Spirit, transgender, and nonbinary people of color (2STNB POC) with teletherapy. The research involved 49 participants in a teletherapy intervention called Healing through Ongoing Psychological Empowerment (HOPE). After the intervention, 47 participants were interviewed to assess their teletherapy experiences.
The analysis revealed 10 positive aspects of teletherapy, including increased access to care, the comfort of familiar settings, alignment with personal preferences, and personalized interactions with therapists. Conversely, participants also reported 12 negative experiences, such as distractions, technology issues, challenges in interpreting body language and emotions, concerns about privacy, and a lack of a dedicated therapeutic space.
Overall, the majority of participants expressed satisfaction with teletherapy, indicating it is a feasible option for providing psychotherapy to 2STNB POC. The study emphasizes the need for providers to be aware of the challenges associated with teletherapy to improve the delivery of mental health services. The clinical trial registration number is NCT05140174.
