A study published in JMIR Mental Health examined the use of ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence model, for emotional and mental health support by 270 adults across 29 countries. Participants reported using ChatGPT for mental health needs, such as diagnosis and treatment, as well as for general psychosocial support like companionship and decision-making. Most users engaged with ChatGPT at least once or twice a month and described a range of emotional experiences, including feelings of connection and relief, but also curiosity and disappointment. Nearly all participants found the tool to be at least somewhat helpful, citing reasons such as perceived emotional support and quality of information. However, users also noted drawbacks, including superficial engagement and limited professionalism. The findings suggest that while generative AI is increasingly utilized for self-help in mental health, there are concerns about the lack of ethical regulations. The study emphasizes the need for greater AI literacy and ethical awareness among users and health care providers, as well as a clearer understanding of when GenAI can aid well-being or potentially create risks.
