The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA), enacted in 2006 in India, aimed to expand the legal definition of domestic violence and provide protections for women facing intimate partner violence (IPV). A longitudinal analysis examined the impact of the PWDVA on IPV rates. Results showed that while some aspects of IPV saw slight improvements, other forms actually worsened. The persistence of deep-rooted social norms continues to shape attitudes and behaviors regarding IPV, which hampers the law’s overall effectiveness. To effectively address IPV in India, a comprehensive approach is needed that goes beyond just legal reforms.
