A randomized controlled trial will investigate the effectiveness of a combined motivational interviewing (MI) and behavioral couples therapy (BCT) intervention for addressing alcohol use disorder (AUD) and intimate partner violence (IPV) in India. This study aims to fill a gap, as few interventions target both issues simultaneously in low- and middle-income countries. The trial will enroll 400 couples, randomly assigning them to either the intervention group, which will receive 10 sessions of MI and BCT, or a control group, which will get enhanced usual care and medical-legal referrals. Data will be collected at five points: baseline, three months, six months, nine months, and 12 months after the intervention. Key outcomes include the frequency of IPV and self-reported alcohol use, along with secondary measures such as breathalyzer test results and communication patterns. Qualitative interviews with 40 couples from the intervention group will explore mechanisms of change. If successful, the study could provide a model for scalable interventions addressing AUD and IPV that can be integrated into India’s primary healthcare system and adapted to similar cultural contexts.
