A pilot study examined the use of the Autism Voices framework to adapt a pre-existing interview tool, the Camberwell Assessment of Need for Adults with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities-Research version (CANDID-R), for autistic adults with complex communication needs. Eleven young autistic adults participated in the study, using visual supports to enhance understanding and engagement during the interview process. Caregivers also completed the interview, and their responses were compared with those of the participants to validate the findings. Results showed that the adapted framework helped participants respond to interview questions, and behavioral observations indicated that the visual aids kept them engaged. However, the study concluded that further adaptations are necessary to improve the process. The research emphasizes the importance of including autistic individuals with communication challenges in studies about their experiences, highlighting that equitable and inclusive research practices can be achieved with creativity and commitment.
