A study published in PLoS One examines the mental health and occupational balance of parents with children who have developmental delays. Traditional early intervention services focus mainly on the child, often neglecting the well-being of parents. The EQo-Mental project aims to understand the relationship between parental mental health, occupational balance, and engagement in meaningful activities.

The study will use a mixed-methods approach involving approximately 700 parents of children aged 0-6 from early intervention centers in Alicante, Spain. The quantitative phase includes validating Spanish versions of two occupational measures and analyzing the relationship between parental mental health and occupational outcomes through surveys assessing stress, anxiety, and well-being. The qualitative phase will involve participatory sessions and focus groups with parents and stakeholders to identify needs and co-develop effective strategies for support.

Data collection is ongoing and expected to conclude in October 2025. The outcomes aim to create evidence-based strategies that enhance parental well-being and engagement in meaningful activities, ultimately fostering resilience in families and improving early intervention services.
