Mini Therapy Horses has been providing equine-assisted therapy to Veterans at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System for over 18 years. Founded by Victoria Nodiff-Netanel, whose father was a Veteran, the program aims to bring comfort and healing to those dealing with PTSD. Equestrian therapy helps improve emotional regulation, build trust, and alleviate symptoms like anxiety and insomnia. A 2021 study found that over half of participating Veterans showed significant improvement in their PTSD symptoms, with a low dropout rate of 7.9%. The program, which features nine miniature horses, offers visits to hospital systems and first responders in the Los Angeles area. Recreation therapist Sether Hills-Johnson emphasizes the positive impact of the therapy, noting how interacting with the mini horses can lift Veterans’ spirits and provide relief from pain and loneliness. Both Veterans and hospital staff look forward to the visits, which reflect the growing recognition of the benefits of equine-assisted therapy. The program continues to highlight the importance of mental health support for Veterans, encouraging those who have not yet applied for VA healthcare benefits to do so.
