Veteran Manuel Calo Jr. is a calming presence for others, drawing on his military experiences and personal challenges to help fellow Veterans. Raised in the Bronx and born in Puerto Rico, Calo served in the Army for 25 years, achieving the rank of battalion command sergeant major. He participated in significant missions, including operations in Grenada, Panama, and Kuwait, always prioritizing the welfare of his soldiers.
After transitioning to civilian life, Calo faced uncertainty but found purpose at the VA Healthcare System in West Palm Beach, where he works as a Certified Peer Specialist. He advocates for Veterans, emphasizing their right to voice their needs and actively participate in their care. His approach includes driving Veterans to appointments and providing support through community outings aimed at reintegration.
Calo also manages a clothing closet at the Domiciliary, ensuring Veterans have essential items. His belief in resilience and community support drives his work. He embodies the motto “Can Do,” continually encouraging Veterans to embrace recovery and rediscover joy while navigating life beyond service. The Domiciliary, established in the late 1860s, has transformed into a vital rehabilitation program for Veterans with various needs.
