Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into various industries, including healthcare. The Veterans Affairs (VA) has utilized AI-assisted technology in colonoscopies for several years, enhancing the procedure’s quality and outcomes. Dr. Douglas Boyce, a gastroenterologist at the Asheville VA, was an early advocate for this technology, emphasizing its role in cancer prevention and patient care. AI improves the adenoma detection rate, a key quality measure in colonoscopies, by identifying subtle changes in the colon that may escape human observation. A mere 1% increase in this detection rate can reduce a patient’s risk of developing colon cancer by 3%. Age is the primary risk factor for colon cancer, and experts recommend routine screenings for adults aged 45 to 49, especially those with a family history of the disease. Air Force Veteran Dawn Yllescas shared her experience of being diagnosed with colon cancer after a routine screening, highlighting the importance of early detection. Dr. Boyce encourages patients to inquire about the use of AI during their procedures, as it can lead to more thorough exams. The VA offers advanced tools and a coordinated care team to support patients throughout their treatment and recovery.
