Gene, a veteran of the Air Force and Air National Guard, faced an unexpected diagnosis of Stage 4 breast cancer after a routine dermatologist visit. Initially thought to be a minor cyst, the diagnosis shocked him, especially given his family history with cancer. His treatment included medication, a mastectomy of his left breast, and 20 sessions of radiation, followed by five years of hormone therapy. Beyond the physical challenges, Gene experienced significant mental health struggles, including anxiety and depression, further complicated by treatment side effects. He utilized the VA Crisis Line for support and continued therapy to manage his mental health.
Gene aims to raise awareness about male breast cancer, often overlooked in discussions about the disease. He shared his story on Facebook to inform other men that breast cancer can affect them too, noting that 1 in 150 breast cancer patients is male. His message emphasizes the importance of regular checkups and mental health support available through the VA. Gene’s journey serves as a reminder that breast cancer knows no gender, and timely medical attention can be life-saving for all.
