VA has enhanced the Military Environmental Exposure Assessment (MEEA) PowerForm within its Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, improving efficiency for clinicians. Front-line providers, including Physician Assistant Megan Baird and Nurse Practitioner Alyssa Musser, identified that documenting MEEAs took longer in the Federal EHR compared to the previous system due to missing auto-populated clinical information. This led to time-consuming data transfers that risked errors.
To address these issues, a collaborative effort among three teams resulted in a revamped MEEA PowerForm that consolidates all relevant clinical fields, streamlining user interaction. A new section for military history allows providers to document Veterans’ service and deployment backgrounds, essential for delivering quality care related to environmental hazards.
The redesign has reduced documentation time and improved data accuracy. Clinicians report faster documentation and more thorough patient information capture. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with users noting the ease of accessing critical information. This new template also facilitates the aggregation of de-identified clinical data for research on military exposures, advancing evidence-based care for Veterans. The project was completed in eight weeks, exemplifying effective collaboration and responsiveness to clinician needs.
