Navy Veteran Kelly Keener, passionate about flying, continued his love for aviation after his military service by joining the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) and participating in Tiger Flights. He earned his commercial pilot certificate in early 2025. After his medical certificate expired, Keener sought a BasicMed sign-off from his VA doctor, Dr. Sravanthi Vonguru, to keep flying. Dr. Vonguru insisted on a cardiology evaluation due to Keener’s recent open-heart surgery to address three blockages in his heart. Tests revealed a critical 80% blockage in the left anterior descending artery, known as the “Widowmaker.” Without surgery, Keener faced significant health risks. He underwent successful open-heart surgery, a shocking revelation for someone who believed he was healthy. Keener credits his doctor, the VA, and his passion for flying with saving his life. Dr. Vonguru expressed satisfaction in the teamwork that led to a positive outcome. Keener’s experience highlights the VA’s commitment to providing quality care for Veterans, and he encourages others to explore their eligibility for VA health care benefits, emphasizing the importance of seeking medical attention. Today, he flies with a deeper appreciation for life.
