At 79, Jack Nist is dedicated to encouraging fellow Veterans to utilize the health care benefits they’ve earned at the VA. A Vietnam Veteran, Nist appreciates the care provided by VA staff, stating that they treat the person, while civilian medicine often focuses solely on the disease. His military service began in 1969, leading to a career as a naval aviator where he completed 75 missions in the Gulf of Tonkin.
Following his service, Nist built a fulfilling life as a screenwriter and college professor. Early in his VA care, his primary care provider emphasized four key aspects for healthy aging: eating and drinking adequately, staying active, ensuring sufficient sleep, and engaging in meaningful activities. This advice has guided Nist, especially as he adapts to living with Parkinson’s Disease.
Nist’s mission now includes expressing gratitude to VA staff and promoting the importance of VA health care. He encourages any Veteran who hasn’t yet applied for their benefits to learn how to get started, reinforcing that it’s never too late to seek the care they deserve.
