Seattle’s RapidRide J Line project is progressing as the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and Seattle Public Utilities finish upgrading over 9,000 feet of water main. This infrastructure work, which took place beneath Eastlake Avenue E and the University District, was essential before starting the road construction needed for the new bus service set to launch in 2027. The upgrade replaced a century-old water main, ensuring a reliable water supply and included the installation of 27 new fire hydrants and the relocation of 11 water meters.

With the utility work now complete, SDOT will shift focus to street construction. This phase will involve paving large sections of the road, enhancing sidewalks and curbs for pedestrian safety, adding protected bike lanes, and improving intersections to facilitate safer crossings. The project aims to transform neighborhoods like Belltown and South Lake Union to support fast and frequent transit.

As construction continues, new bus infrastructure will be introduced, including well-lit bus stations, dedicated bus lanes, and raised boarding islands. The completion of the water main work marks a significant milestone in creating a world-class transit experience for Seattle residents.
