Shalimar Gonzales, CEO of Solid Ground, provided an update on the challenges facing the national safety net as federal government changes threaten vital programs for millions of Americans. Despite these looming threats, many harmful changes have been delayed due to federal judges freezing them in response to various lawsuits from states and nonprofits. Key programs such as HUD, SNAP, and Medicaid are now tied up in legal proceedings, which could take six to 18 months to resolve.
Gonzales emphasized the importance of preparation amid this uncertainty, noting that Solid Ground and its partners must be ready to respond quickly when court decisions are made. Community members have already shown resilience, as seen during last fall’s government shutdown when individuals and organizations donated over $240,000 to support local food banks.
In this time of uncertainty, Gonzales urged the community to strengthen the safety net by becoming a Community Builder and donating monthly to Solid Ground. He highlighted that even small contributions can help provide hope and stability to those in need as the organization prepares to face potential challenges ahead.
