Ryan Redshaw, a veteran of the Army National Guard, faced life-altering challenges after sustaining a traumatic brain injury during training. Diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease at 33, he medically retired after 12 years of service. His wife, Liana, struggled to navigate the complexities of care while pregnant with their third child and managing two other young children. Liana, who had no prior experience with the VA system, initially sought help from civilian doctors but encountered difficulties.
After becoming an Elizabeth Dole Fellow for caregivers, Liana sold their home in Florida to move closer to family in Illinois. She faced financial strain while securing a memory-care facility for Ryan. When she learned about Operation Homefront’s Critical Financial Assistance Program, she received $7,300 for rent, food, and essential baby items. This support allowed Ryan to move to a care facility near family, where Liana and their children regularly visit. Liana expressed gratitude for Operation Homefront, highlighting their follow-up support and assistance, which has been vital during this challenging time. Since 2011, Operation Homefront has provided over $46 million to help military families in need.
