Army Veteran Freddy Allen has played a key role in developing a toolkit aimed at addressing respiratory health issues related to airborne hazards for Veterans. Having served overseas, Allen understands the health risks posed by environmental exposures, such as those from burning waste. The Deployment-Related Respiratory Disease (DRRD) toolkit was created through collaboration between Veterans and VA professionals, focusing on long-term breathing issues linked to military service, like asthma and sinusitis. Dr. Anays Sotolongo, co-director of the Airborne Hazards and Burn Pits Center of Excellence, emphasized the importance of providing resources that help Veterans understand DRRD and what to expect during evaluations.
The toolkit includes a webpage, brochure, and poster, offering information on airborne hazards, symptom identification, VA medical appointments, recommended treatments, and the latest research. It also features checklists and resources for filing disability claims and accessing VA health programs. Allen believes that the toolkit’s creation by Veterans enhances its credibility and reassures others facing similar health challenges that they are not alone. The comprehensive resource aims to empower Veterans to seek help and better understand their conditions.
