On a gray Friday morning in Seattle, Solid Ground’s office buzzed with activity as staff and volunteers sorted and packed 1,540 handmade items, including hats, sweaters, mittens, scarves, and blankets. This initiative, part of the Knit-It-Alls project, has been a winter tradition for over 30 years, providing warmth and a sense of belonging to families and individuals in King County. The pieces are crafted by approximately 40 volunteers who contribute over 4,000 hours each year through Solid Ground’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Jen Gahagan, Volunteer Services Manager, highlighted the heartfelt appreciation expressed in thank-you notes received annually. The items are distributed through Solid Ground’s Broadview Shelter & Transitional Housing and Regional Access Point programs, as well as other community organizations like FamilyWorks and Jewish Family Services. North Helpline Community Connector Kerry O’Meara noted the joy recipients feel when choosing from the colorful designs, emphasizing that these items offer both warmth and dignity. The project relies on dedicated knitters, some of whom have volunteered for a decade or more, and Solid Ground encourages more community members to join as Knit-It-Alls Volunteers to help meet the growing demand.
