The Veterans Crisis Line offers free, 24/7 support to all Veterans, providing help via phone, chat, or text. It is accessible regardless of when or where Veterans served or their discharge status. Friends and family can also reach out for support. The service is designed for any Veteran feeling overwhelmed, needing to talk, or experiencing suicidal thoughts. When contacting the line, Veterans do not need to provide personal information. Trained responders, familiar with crisis intervention and military culture, will listen and offer resources tailored to individual situations.
If there’s a concern about immediate danger, responders will assess the situation and can facilitate contact with local suicide prevention coordinators if needed. Veterans are encouraged to learn about the signs of crisis and utilize additional resources like the Crisis Conversation Handout and the VA’s Resource Locator for further support. The Veterans Crisis Line prioritizes confidentiality and is available without the need for VA enrollment. To access the service, Veterans can dial 988 and press 1, chat online, or text 838255.
