Army veteran Keith McCarter faced severe health challenges after experiencing end-stage heart failure at just 25 years old. In 2011, he underwent surgery to install a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Over three years, McCarter managed his condition, which included needing gastric sleeve surgery to aid weight loss. This procedure helped him shed over 100 pounds and improve his health significantly. In 2014, he had the LVAD removed, living independently with just the ICD and medications for nearly 11 years.

However, by the end of 2024, heart failure symptoms returned, leading to multiple procedures and hospitalization at the Madison VA. A new catheter-based heart pump was implanted to stabilize his condition until he could receive a heart transplant in March 2025. McCarter credits his recovery to the dedicated care from his medical team, especially Dr. Murray at the Madison VA Hospital. Now on medical leave, he is determined to return to his job as a Dane County sheriff’s deputy, expressing gratitude for the support he has received throughout his 15-year health journey.
