The VA has introduced a new regulation aimed at expediting decisions and payments for certain survivors’ claims. Effective Feb. 23, the VA will now process claims for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) and Survivors Pension more efficiently. Previously, claims had to be handled separately, which prolonged the process. Under the new rule, the VA will pay the higher benefit, usually DIC, without waiting to assess the lesser benefit. VA Secretary Doug Collins emphasized that this change simplifies the claims process and reduces administrative burdens, providing quicker support to beneficiaries during difficult times. DIC is a tax-free monthly benefit for eligible surviving spouses, children, and parents of service members who died in duty or Veterans who passed away from service-related injuries or illnesses. Conversely, Survivors Pension offers tax-free monthly payments to qualified surviving spouses and dependent children of wartime Veterans, subject to certain income and net worth limits.
